31.5"w x 39.5"h. childrens toys, corn, foam, spray paint & acrylic on aluminum. 2015.
Our government subsidizes the production of commodity crops such as corn in an effort to make sure we have enough of it and that prices stay low. In turn corn is really cheap, and so the production of sugar substitutes like high fructose corn syrup becomes a reasonable business move. These calories are cheap and abundant, but are starving our children of the nutrition necessary to thrive.

48"h x 60"w. Toys, acrylic, and spray paint on wood. 2009.
Toy Soldier was made in response to reading "What is the what?", which chronicled the plight of a Southern Sudanese boys journey from his war torn homeland through Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, and eventually Atlanta, Georgia. Toy Soldier is a portrait of a child soldier, something that Valentino Achek Deng experienced firsthand, and was a much too common site during the Sudanese civil war. Growing up in New Jersey, USA war was something of media, and of movies, and was never something you confronted in your own backyard. We played war as youths, picking guys and setting up elaborate battles, but that was it. It was play. This piece harkens back to that spirit of play while imposing the reality of a child that I do not know.
